Primary Care Public Health Nursing Service

Sharing of Professional Knowledge with Nurses in Macau

The public health nursing service provided by the Department of Health (the Department) has long been recognized by the public for its efficiency and effectiveness in meeting the clients' needs.  In the past four years, the Department has received more than five thousand appreciations in various forms each year.  Amongst those, many expressed gratitude for the professional performance that nurses had exhibited during their course of practice, as well as the excellent services they had provided.  It really encouraged nurses to devote their great efforts persistently in the pursuit of excellence in service provision.

In view of the exemplary professional practice of the public health nurses, the Hong Kong Society for Nursing Education had invited the Principal Nursing Officer, Ms Kittie CHAN, of the Department to be the keynote speaker of the 'Second Macau-Hong Kong Nursing Conference' held on 27 November 2004 in Macau.  The theme of the Conference was on promoting health for the older adults in the 21st Century.  It aimed to provide a platform for nursing professionals from different health care settings in Hong Kong and their counterparts from Macau to share their professional expertise in working with the elderly.  It was hoped that by means of inquiry and open discussion, nurses would gain new insight into the issue that the future direction for promoting elderly health could be well illuminated and realistically followed with inspiration.

At the Conference, Ms Kittie CHAN shared with the participants the updated concepts of aging, the global situation of aging population; the World Health Organization's directions and policies in promoting the health of the elderly, as well as the related public health services provided by the Department in line with those policies and directions. Moreover, she highlighted the public health nurses' contributions in providing those services and the innovations that they had initiated for promoting the quality of service via evidence-based practice.

It is worthwhile for the public health nurses to participate in this kind of professional conference.  The interflow among nurses not only enhances their mutual understanding, but also strengthens the connection among them.  This is beneficial to future endeavors that call for the collaboration among nurses from various service sectors or areas for promoting the quality of care.  In addition, the involvement of nurses in such professional activities is one of the highly recommended strategies for life-long learning.
