Roles of Nursing Staff in the Infection Control Branch of the
Centre for Health Protection
The Infection Control Branch (ICB) of the Centre for Health Protection (CHP) is a service newly established in June 2004. Its main function is to work in partnership with healthcare professionals in various healthcare settings such as hospitals and institutions to increase public awareness of the importance of good infection control practice. With commitment and concerted efforts, staff of the ICB strive to diminish the threats of emerging infectious diseases such as Severe Acute Respiratory Syndrome (SARS) which had haunted many people with bitter memories.
ICB nurses are mainly involved in providing infection control training to staff and clients, giving advice on infection control issues, standardizing surveillance principles and participating in disease outbreak management. They provide infection control training for healthcare workers both in the public and private sectors to ensure their compliance with infection control practice standards. They also promulgate general and specific infection control guidelines to organizations which need to develop and implement good infection control practice to prevent and control the outbreak of communicable diseases. Moreover, they assist in standardization of surveillance principles and monitor the safety and effectiveness of the prevention and control measures as well as participate in related research. Furthermore, they work hand-in-hand with other branches of the CHP and among hospitals on outbreak management. Through multi-disciplinary collaboration, ICB nurses hope to help the community and clients to build capacity to prevent the occurrence of infectious diseases or to combat them effectively in case of any future outbreak.
