QUALITY IMPROVEMENT TOOLS AND TECHNIQUES

Pareto Chart 1

Definition : A bar graph depicting in descending order (from left to right) the frequency of events being studied.
   
Purpose : Allow teams to categorize occurrences and focus on those that are most frequent and most important. Help prioritise where to start the improvement effort.
   
Procedure :
  • Decide on the topic of study.
  • Select the type of causes or conditions to be compared.
  • Determine the standard for comparison.
  • Collect data.
  • Compare frequency, cost, or amount (as appropriate) between categories.
  • Draw the vertical axis indicating the standard for comparison in increments.
  • Label the horizontal axis with each factor in descending order.
  • Draw the bars to indicate the frequency (or cost or amount) of each factor.
