Nominal Group Technique 2

Definition : A structured method of generating a list of ideas or condensing the ideas to a more manageable number in which the group does not engage in the usual amount of interaction typical of a real team.

Purpose :
  • Allow every team member to have equal input into discussions.
  • Good for dealing with controversial issues.

Procedure :
  • Define the task in the form of a question.
  • Describe the purpose of the discussion.
  • Introduce and clarify the question.
  • Generate ideas by asking team members to write down their answers in silence.
  • List ideas by asking each team member in turn to read one idea from their list until all ideas are listed.
  • Clarify and discuss ideas.
  • Give each participant a set of cards, the number depend on the number of items on the list : 4 cards for up to 20 items; 6 cards for 20 to 35 items; 8 cards for 35 to 50 items etc.
  • Ask members to individually select items from the list according to their own ranking of importance and write down one item per card.
  • Ask members to assign a point value to each selected item. The highest point value should be given to the most important item (In a 4-card system, the most important card is numbered 4,the next important 3 etc)
  • Collect the cards and tally the votes, noting the point value of each vote against the specific item, then adding up these votes.
  • The item with the highest point total is the group's selection of the most important item.
